04 1b: Pray and read the Word as a family, tell its stories to children

Have daily family devotions.

Ask each child to take turns to prepare something special.
If your family is musical you might include singing.
Discuss things that each person might do, at school, at work or while with friends, to glorify God.
The Bible passages in this menu all suggest things to find. Mention what to look for before reading the passage. Select passages that fit the family situation.

Find in Ephesians 5:21 through 6:4 guidelines for keeping peace and order in the home.

*Find in Genesis 1:27-28 and 2:18-25 the origin of the family and its purposes.

Find in Deuteronomy 5:16 and 6:1-9 guidelines for instructing children.

Find in 1 John 2:12-14 guidelines for instructing children.

*Find in the book of Ruth several cases of tender family love and loyalty.

*Find in the book of Luke key events in the life of Jesus that you can read or relate to your children. Ask older children to relate some of these stories to the younger.

Find in Deuteronomy reasons to know and obey the Word of God.

Find in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 what the Israelites were to teach their children (this followed immediately after they received the Ten Commandments), and how often.

Help Parents Teach the Word to Their Children, Wes Haystead

In group meetings, ask parents what they currently do in order to include their children in family worship.

If you work cross-culturally, parents may enjoy more mutual trust with their children than do those in the West.
