Operation

Login. Upon launching the program, every new user must supply a user name and a password to keep their progress and scores private and separate from other users' scores.

Progress. The story consists of four successive levels of increasing difficulty as the characters learn to plant reproductive churches in their own culture, a near-by culture, a distant culture and an hostile culture. Each level moves through six phases of developing churches or cells of new believers and local leaders.

Screens. The program presents a series of windows. Some display the story text, others present options from which the user must make choices. Choices determine scores and story outcomes. Passing scores must be attained to progress from one phase to another and from one level to another.

Scores. Each user earns competitive points by making correct choices when presented with options. An evil adversary also makes points by the user's wrong choices and by merely being more crafty that the user. A current phase's points are displayed on the screen. At the same time, the user gains skill points by making correct choices relative to practical methods. These points are cumulative through all levels and are display in a summary at the end of each phase.

Keywords. Most screens provide a button to access an hypertext glossary of key words and concepts that amplify and supplement the principles presented in the story. It is highly recommended that each user spend time reviewing the key words discussions.

Reports. At the end of most phases, the user is asked to supply feedback about their own ministry plans based on principles from the story. Their responses are stored in a text file that can be viewed through a word processor or sent to an instructor or mentor. These are stored in each user's file located on the hard drive at \Disciple\User.feedback.txt, and should be sent to the user's mentor or coach at agreed intervals.

Mentoring. It is recommended that each user have an instructor, coach or mentor with whom they can chat or correspond about their progress and learning. Read file \Disciple\Mentor.html to learn about four mentoring options available to most users.

Learning theory

Patterson and Currah believe that most adult workers learn better from a contextualized approach to real-life kinds of situations, receiving rapid feedback from their choices, with an opportunity to improve their performance. Hence the story line, frequent questions and feedback, and "lock-step" progress through phases with opportunity to repeat phases. We invite comments from users about this method.
