What is church?

Jesus said, "I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it."

Church has several meanings:

1. Universal: All Christians, both in heaven and still on earth.

2. Global: All Christians in all places. They are spiritually united.

3. National: All Christians in each nation and ethnic community.

4. Denominational: Congregations which share a name or identity.

5. Congregational: Christians who gather at a place of worship.

6. Informal: Small groups who gather anywhere they choose.

7. Non-formal: Christians who gather spontaneously anywhere.

What do churches do?

Jesus said, "If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love."

1. Love God, love one another, love others, love enemies.

2. Repent, believe in Jesus' death and resurrection, and receive his Spirit.

3. Share Jesus Good News and baptise new believers.

4. Pray to God by using Jesus' name.

5. Remember Jesus' death by celebrating communion.

6. Give freely to help the needy and to send messengers everywhere.

7. Help each other to obey these commandments.

(Churches also  have many different traditions, leaders, costumes, ceremonies, theologies, requirements, and liturgies.)
