Keep a shepherd's watchful eye open for people who are hurting.

• Go to them immediately, or see that someone does.
• Pray with them and encourage them.

Find in James 5:13-18 guidelines for dealing with the ill.

Find in the book of Job good and bad examples and viewpoints for counseling those who are suffering.

Find in Lamentations several passages that show how Jeremiah expressed his grief for a loss (in his case, the fall of Jerusalem).

If you work cross-culturally, then learn what are the supposed causes to which people attribute disease and misfortune.

• In most cultures, sickness is not believed to be due solely to natural causes. Therefore, you do well to ask people about the their relationships or activities which they believe are the causes, and give them an opportunity to confess and forsake their misdeeds.
• Couple your prayer for healing with thanks to God for the forgiveness that comes from Jesus.

Seeking healing and wellness is a part of every religion.

• If you work cross-culturally, find out what are the local healing practices. Even the followers of Jesus will go to doctors of other religions to get relief from disease, and it sometimes seems to work for them.
• The name of the Lord Jesus Christ and the prayers of his people will usually prove stronger than the local religious spirits.
• Learn to pray for the sick and to let the Lord Jesus show his victory over the local beliefs and powers.
