STEWARDSHIP, Advanced Level 3d
11 3d: Mobilize many volunteer workers
Develop a leadership style that works with volunteer workers.
- Recruiting and coordinating the work of volunteer workers requires an entirely different style of leadership than that usually used for paid employees.
- Volunteers cannot be pushed--for long--they must be led.
- They need recognition and praise for whatever sacrifice they make, whatever labor of love they do.
- Often elderly people and youth desire jobs in the church but are overlooked, mainly because they are shy to ask, or do not think they can do things will enough.
Find in Ephesians 4:16 a principle that makes it easy to recruit and mobilize volunteer workers.
Find in Romans 12 more principles that make it easy to recruit and mobilize volunteer workers.

Keep Volunteer Workers on the Job
For providing support for volunteer workers: Leadership Handbooks of Practical Theology, editor, James D. Berkley, Volume 3, section 25
For mobilizing volunteers: Recruiting Volunteers in the Church, Mark Senter III
Keep a file in which you note the current ministries and projects that the followers have undertaken, to evaluate the work of volunteers.
- Review these records occasionally.
- Make appointments with leaders and groups to learn their needs, hopes, and victories.
- Meet regularly with all volunteer workers to discuss their projects and listen to their suggestions.
- Let them all talk in these meetings. They know what you do, but unless you listen to them, you will not know what they do.
Find an older volunteer who has administrative skills and can set up a tracking system to keep current on what all the followers of Christ are doing and what they do well.
- Let them know that you keep these records--only of their service and successes--so that they will want it to keep the record keeper informed.
- Use these records to match person to tasks according to their interests, gifts, skills, and personalities.
- This entails time and work, but the result will be much satisfaction for you and the workers, and more spiritual fruit.
