Section 12: TEACHING AND DOING THE WORD OF GOD, Advanced Level 3a

12 3a: Know the Bible books, develop inductive Bible study skills

By your example and with easy-to-use tools, enable teachers and home group leaders to be expositors of the Word of God, bringing out and applying the essential messages of key Bible passages, (not by simply giving a running commentary or verse by verse paraphrase).

Help your people to study the Bible inductively, that is, by letting it speak for itself. They search out its truths on their own initiative before going to the commentaries or theology books.

Newer workers in training need specific direction for this: tell them what to look for (for example, this menu, following the sword icon, usually says what to find and where).

Your people should know, for example:

Find in Luke 24:44-48 evidence that the entire Old Testament speaks (by types, figures, prophecies and historical foundations) of Jesus Christ. There are dozens of Old Testament types of His ministry, His Person, His kingdom and His purposes.

Find in Acts 26:22-23 a similar suggestion that the Old Testament builds the foundations for Jesus' coming and ministry.

Find in Acts 17:10-12 an example of the good results of inductive Bible study.

Find in 2 Timothy 3:14-17 the value of studying Scripture, and its final purpose (v. 17).
