Section 13: TRAINING LEADERS, Pastoral Level

Those who mentor small group shepherds must become competent in four domains: knowledge, beliefs, values and skills. Mark items you plan to work on to improve:
KNOWLEDGE TO MASTER
o
NT essentials for a Body of disciples: commands of Jesus & his apostles, other vital ministries (Paul-Timothy Training Menu, all 14 areas).o
How to conduct a session (prayer, listening, planning, reviewing studies done, assigning new studies related to the plans, prayer).REMEMBER: a good mentor listens before advising!
BELIEFS TO AFFIRM
o
God has put in the Body of Christ the life force necessary to grow and reproduce.o
The Holy Spirit gifts every believer for ministry to others.o
The essence of faith is to love Jesus and obey his commands.VALUES TO OWN
o
Loving care for those we mentor and their flock.o
Willing to shepherd their own household.o
Groups small enough to practice the NT "one-another" commands.o
The mutual harmony of face-to-face, gift-based ministries.o
High view of the church's ability to train its own leaders and reproduce.SKILLS TO SHOW
o
Model skills in the field for what you want others to do (e.g., small group worship, Lord's Table, open discussions, etc.)o
Use of the Preferences Chart.o
Using the menu to get material that fits current needs of the people and to assess progress in trainees' ministries.TO BECOME A MENTOR
o
One must first be mentored, for the method is more "caught" than taught.o
One must have a menu of tools (widely applicable materials and principles).o
One must be deprogrammed from formal methods of education.o
One must work mainly with men who can mentor other men in turn.Find in 2 Timothy, in each of the following passages, a characteristic of a good mentor:
2 Timothy 1:3-4
2 Timothy 1:6
2 Timothy 1:7-8
